Synapse

The input router: catch anything, and it grades, routes, and keeps it forever.

A synapse passes a signal along only when it is strong enough. That is the whole idea. Synapse is the part of LifeOS that everything you notice flows through: it catches a thing the instant it crosses your attention, preserves it before anything can judge it, grades it against what you are actually trying to do, and routes it to the home it earns.

Why it exists

Good ideas arrive constantly and almost all of them evaporate. You read something worth keeping, tell yourself you will come back to it, and never do. The ones you do save land in a notes app, a bookmark folder, or a spreadsheet, and by the time they matter you cannot find them or cannot remember why you saved them.

The failure is rarely capture itself. It is everything after: no permanent home, no sense of whether the thing was actually any good, and no decision about where it belongs. Synapse exists so that noticing something is the only work you have to do.

How it works

Every capture, from any source, is written to an append-only store called the amber ledger the instant it arrives, before anything else happens. The name is exact: like an insect in amber, whatever enters is preserved as it was the moment it was caught. That ordering is the point — grading and filing can fail, and the thing still survives.

From there it gets read at the fidelity it deserves. A video is transcribed. An article is fetched in full. A PDF is downloaded and actually read rather than skimmed from its title. A voice memo is transcribed. A headline never stands in for the thing itself.

Then comes the synapse mechanic: the signal is weighted and transmitted. It is graded against your TELOS — is this good, and good for what you are doing — and routed to where it earns a place: a knowledge note, a draft, a task, a queued improvement to the system. The “where does this go?” decision, the one that used to cost the most, happens without you. Weak signals do not propagate anywhere, but nothing is ever lost: the ledger keeps every capture, including the ones that never earn a destination.

Recall is half the contract. A signal journaled and never dug out is a write-only archive, so what was captured comes back when you ask for it in your own words.

Where it fits

Synapse is the router between your senses and your memory. Capture surfaces feed it; it grades and routes; memory keeps and compounds. Adding a new way to capture — a phone, a watch, a browser, a wearable — means writing one small adapter against Synapse’s contract rather than building a pipeline, which is what makes “capture from anywhere” a realistic goal instead of an endless one.

What it feels like

The tell is what stops happening. You stop keeping seventeen tabs open as a to-read pile, because flicking a thing into the system is faster than guarding it in a tab. You stop rating your own finds at capture time — the grading happens against your actual goals, not your mood. And the old dread of the notes app, the one where saving something felt like burying it, inverts: the stuff you catch starts showing up again, at the moment it’s useful, which trains you to catch more.
