The number one problem with AI systems is direction, not execution. Models are already extraordinary at doing. What they almost never get is clear instruction on what to do—so they build the wrong thing brilliantly. Intent engineering is LifeOS’s answer: capture what you’re ultimately trying to achieve, convey it to your AI on every task, and verify the output against it.

Why it exists

A capable model with a vague ask produces confident motion in a random direction. The fix isn’t a smarter model; every model generation makes execution cheaper and direction more valuable. Clarity about what you want is the whole game, and almost nobody’s tooling carries that clarity from where it lives—your goals, your context, your standards—into the individual task.

How it works

Intent lives at several scales, and LifeOS holds all of them:

  • TELOS holds durable intent—your mission, goals, problems, and strategies. The why behind every what.

  • ISAs hold task intent—what done looks like, written as testable criteria before the work starts.

  • Memory and context carry situational intent—who you are, what you own, what you’ve already decided.

  • Verification closes the loop—output checked against the stated intent, never against vibes. Intent isn’t fully conveyed until the result is checked against it.

When you ask for something, the system doesn’t just relay your words. It assembles what you ultimately want around them, and the work is judged against that.

The model picks a framework, invents a tone, guesses at an audience, and ships something generic. Competent execution, random direction. You spend the next hour steering it back toward what you meant.

Done gets written down as criteria before work starts: makes the argument, sounds like you, loads fast, links resolve. The output is checked against those, not against vibes.

The point: the prompt didn't get longer. The system around it got smarter about what you ultimately want — that's the productization.

Still prompting

Intent engineering extends prompting rather than replacing it. It is still technically prompt engineering—what changes is the thing being articulated: not HOW something should be done, but WHAT should be done. Prompting is how you convey intent in the moment; intent engineering is the infrastructure that makes every prompt carry what you ultimately want.

The stack works out to intent → context → prompt. Context engineering fills the model’s window with the right information for the step. Intent engineering is the tier above: knowing what you actually want before any context gets assembled.

Where it fits

This is the platform’s defining job, and the reason the rest exists. Current State → Ideal State is the move; intent engineering is what makes the move aimable. TELOS feeds it, the Algorithm runs it, the ISA records it, verification proves it.

What it feels like

Mostly it feels like being understood on the first pass. You say the short version and get the thing you actually wanted, because the long version was already on file. Corrections shift from “no, that’s not what I meant” — the expensive kind — to “good, now push it further,” which is the kind that compounds. And when a result misses, there’s a written statement of what done meant to check it against, so the miss is findable instead of a feeling.
